EMT or Emergency Medical technicians handle the patient before getting to the hospital. Their duty is to recognize initial problem and manage medical emergencies. The 911 operator sends EMTs to a location of emergency and they reach to the location by following all traffic rules of an ambulance. These people work under the supervision of a physician through a radio communication. An EMT is capable of handling automobile accidents, heat attacks, unscheduled births, poisoning, gunshots etc. After giving immediate medication when the patient is brought to the hospital, these EMTs place the patient on stretcher or wheel chair and then take them to emergency department of the hospital. It is also their duty to clean their stretcher, wheel chairs and ambulance and keep it ready for the next emergency. EMTs perform very stressful work, therefore anybody who wants to become an EMT must be emotionally stable, capable of handling stress and as they would also be required to lift patients, physical strength is very important. There are three types of EMT and each of them requires different levels of education. The most advanced level amongst these is EMT paramedics, which requires a two-year associate degree in the relevant field and then pass an exam called an EMT paramedic exam.
