A dental assistant performs clinical as well as official duties of a dental clinic. In the clinical section of his duties, he has to sterilize all equipment used to treat patients and dispose of unsterilized objects like syringes and orthodontic wires and brackets. Dental assistants are required to assist Dentist while operating a patient and treating for any disease. They also have to check for the items used in dental treatments and place order for those which are about to finish. A dental assistant also explains the treatment procedure to the patient before it is conducted. The office work of a dental assistant includes management of appointments, they make calls and confirm appointments and if any appointment is cancelled, it is their duty to inform the patient and fix another date for next appointment. A dental assistant collects fee from every patient and gives it to the doctor at the end of each day. Typically, the post of dental assistant does not require any educational background but employers usually hire qualified people. There are many colleges, which are offering dental assistant programs. It includes one-year diploma program and two-year associate degree. A dental assistant may also become certified dental assistant (CDA) to get steady promotions by appearing in a certification exam.
